Recipe- Homemade Honey Wheat Bread

I haven't bought bread from the store in over *8 months*(Updated- now it's been over 2 years!) now. I make this once a week and it lasts all week. I do French Toast the last day and use up any leftovers. It stays good just on my shelf in ziplock bags. It holds together nicely for sandwiches. We love it and can't go back to the store bought stuff now. It's super easy, so try it! I got this recipe from my Sister-In-Law Jenni. She's made it into rolls before too and they tasted yummy that way as well. Good luck and let me know how it goes :-)

Whole Wheat Honey Bread

Put in Mixer:
3 C. warm water
2 T. yeast
1/3 C. Honey
5 C. flour (I use regular flour this time and whole wheat the next time just to be cheaper)
Mix. Let raise in mixer 30 minutes.
It's really important that you use warm water and mix with your yeast before putting into the mixer. This will make it so there's not lumps of yeast. Also, the water won't activate if it's cold and will kill it if it's too hot. Luke warm (room temp) water is best.
This is how it will look after this first group of ingredients. Leave it like this, and cover for 30 minutes to let it raise. It should raise up almost to the top of the bowl in that time.
The dough will puff up really pretty. See above picture.

Then just give it a quick pulse or two and start adding the following ingredients. I let it mix slowly as I add the flour little at a time.

Then add to your mixer and mix:
1/3 C. Honey
1T. Salt
3 T. Canola Oil
3 1/2 C. Whole Wheat Flour

Knead about 8-10 minutes ( I do it in the mixer, make sure you're using your dough hook and just let it knead the dough), Place dough in lightly oiled bowl.

Here it is after you've taken it out of the mixer and put into your oiled bowl.
Cover and let double in size.
Punch down, place in greased bread pans to raise. (about hour to hour and half)
This recipe makes 2 large loafs or 3 small loafs.

After Raising (about hour and half to two hours)

Bake 350 for 25-30 minutes.
Beautiful. Easy. Super Yummy.

Cool on cooling rack. Rub some butter on the tops right when they come out.

We're hooked!

  1. Thanks for the recipe I made the bread tonight and will let it cool overnight. My family will eat it in the morning. Mine doesn't look as good as yours...this was my first time EVER making bread. We are such a bread loving family so if it's a hit with the family this is what we will be making from now on. Thanks for the step-by-step instructions

  3. Hi Stephanie, I use a Bosch mixer but you can use a Kitchenaid as well. Hope that helps.

  4. Just made this recipe the other day, got the link from http://madeitonmonday.blogspot.com/2012/03/more-pinned-yumminess.html. Amazing!! And the first time I've ever successfully made bread!! Thanks so much for the recipe, it has now become my go-to recipe for bread, going to attempt making it once a week and no longer buy bread from the store. I also shared the recipe with my friends on facebook, a bunch of them started making it too :)

  7. Does this recipe work if you don't have a mixer?

    1. I would imagine you could make it without a mixer but you would just have to do a lot more work mixing by hand and then take time to knead it at the end. I just let the mixer do that, so I don't know how long to tell you to knead it, but I'm sure with some experimenting, you could figure out the right amount of time. Good luck!

  8. I don't know why everyone is raving about this recipe. I followed the directions to a T and my dough was as dry as popcorn. It still rose but trying to kneed it was impossible and It wouldn't shape into anything but a mess bc it was so dry. It baked but looks like a toddler threw it all together. I will not be making this again.

    1. Hi Jennifer, Sorry it didn't turn out for you! I've made it literally hundreds of times (as this was posted several years ago) and I've only had that happen 1 time and it was because I mixed up the water and only put in 2 cups instead of 3. It was very dry. Maybe it was something with your flour? I've just enjoyed this recipe because it's quick and only takes ingredients that I always have on hand. Good luck with your bread making!

  10. Hi, I am a novice and a bit confused about the incredients. Does this recipe call for a total of 8 1/2 C flour? Thanks, Bob

    1. Yes! I actually halved the recipe and made only one loaf. So it was about 4 1/2 cups for me but for her recipe, it is a total of 8 1/2 cups of flour.
